Head to head
Jetboil Flash vs MSR WindBurner (2027)
Head-to-head: Jetboil Flash versus MSR WindBurner, the two leading integrated systems compared on wind, speed, and cold performance.

Jetboil Flash
The fastest integrated system: a liter boiled in about 100 seconds.
- Weight (system): 13.1 oz (371 g)
- Boil time (1 L): 1 min 40 sec

MSR WindBurner
A radiant-burner system that wind simply cannot blow out.
- Weight (1.0 L system): 15.3 oz (434 g)
- Boil time (1 L): 4.5 min (sheltered rating; excels in wind)
Our recommendation
Choose the Flash for three-season speed and value; its sheltered boil is the fastest here. Choose the WindBurner for wind, cold, and altitude, where its enclosed radiant burner and regulator keep boiling when conditions turn serious.
Burner architecture
The Flash uses an exposed burner under a FluxRing pot, fast and efficient in fair weather. The WindBurner's radiant burner is fully enclosed in the pot base, trading a little still-air speed for near-total wind immunity. The designs optimize for different mountains.
Cold and fuel-end performance
The WindBurner's pressure regulator maintains output as canisters chill and empty, the exact conditions of alpine mornings. The Flash's performance fades more noticeably with a cold, low canister, a manageable but real limitation.
Speed in still air
The Flash's roughly 100-second liter beats the WindBurner's sheltered rating comfortably. If your trips are summer and sheltered, the Flash is faster, lighter, and cheaper, full stop.
Choose Jetboil Flash if…
- You backpack three seasons in reasonable weather
- Boil-only speed is your top priority
- You want the lighter, less expensive system
Choose MSR WindBurner if…
- You climb, ski-tour, or camp in serious wind and cold
- You need consistent boils on low, cold canisters
- Reliability in bad weather outranks still-air speed
Questions, answered
Which is better in wind?
The WindBurner, decisively. Its enclosed burner is the wind benchmark among integrated systems.
Which is more fuel efficient?
Both are excellent. The Flash leads in fair weather; the WindBurner leads when wind and cold enter the picture.
Can either simmer?
Neither simmers well. Cooks in the Jetboil ecosystem should look at the MiniMo; MSR system cooks manage with careful valve work on the WindBurner.
