How we research
Every TrueGear recommendation is the output of a fixed research process. We publish it here so you can judge our work on its method, not just its conclusions.
Step 1: Topic selection
We cover product categories where buyers face real confusion: crowded lineups, misleading marketing claims, or specs that do not translate into real-world performance. We prioritize topics with clear buyer intent and verifiable product data.
Step 2: Spec compilation from manufacturer docs
For each candidate product we compile specifications directly from manufacturer datasheets and official documentation. This establishes an objective baseline before any opinions enter the picture. Every specification shown on our pages is traceable to a published source, listed in the Sources box on each review.
Step 3: Retailer documentation cross-check
We cross-check specifications and feature claims against retailer documentation and listings. When manufacturer and retailer data disagree, we say so rather than picking the friendlier number.
Step 4: Published expert review synthesis
We read published expert reviews and long-term owner reports to find recurring patterns: failure modes, durability surprises, and use cases where a product over- or under-delivers. One-off complaints do not move a ranking; repeated patterns do.
Step 5: Comparison framework
Products are ranked against each other on the criteria that matter for the category, and every pick is tied to a specific buyer profile (budget, frequency of use, skill level). The comparison tables on our best-of pages show the raw specs side by side so you can verify our reasoning.
What we never do
- We never claim hands-on testing we have not performed. Research-based assessments are explicitly labeled on every review.
- We never invent specifications, prices, ratings, scores, or availability.
- We never accept payment for placement, and manufacturers cannot pay to influence rankings.
- We never publish manufacturer-provided reviews as our own.
Update policy
Each guide shows its update date. We revisit guides when new models launch, availability changes, or reliability data changes a recommendation. Corrections follow our corrections policy.
