Gimbal faults look dramatic but are usually procedural: an unbalanced axis, a lens extended after balancing, motor strength mismatched to payload, or a skipped calibration. Work through these fixes in order before concluding the hardware is faulty - in most cases the gimbal is honestly reporting a setup problem.

Gimbal vibrates or buzzes when powered on

That is the motors fighting an unbalanced or overloaded axis. Power off, rebalance each axis until the camera holds position at any angle without drifting, and remove accessories you added after balancing. Then run auto-tune or set motor strength manually in the app: too-high strength on a light rig causes the same buzzing as overload.

Horizon drifts or tilts slowly during shots

Run the gimbal's horizon or IMU calibration on a perfectly level surface, and update firmware, since drift corrections ship there. On camera gimbals, confirm the camera is not slowly sliding on its plate - a loose quick-release screw produces a drift that calibration cannot fix.

Gimbal goes limp or shuts down mid-shoot

Motors are protecting themselves from sustained overload or heat, or the battery is sagging. Check total rig weight against payload with headroom, rebalance so motors work near neutral, and let a hot gimbal rest. On phone gimbals, remove thick cases that offset the clamp's centre of gravity.

Tracking keeps losing the subject

Improve the tracker's view: better light on the subject, a plainer background, and a full-body or face framing inside the app's recommended distance. On hardware trackers like the Hohem AI sensor, clean the sensor window and confirm it faces the subject, not the operator. Re-select the subject after any app or mode switch, since most apps drop tracking state there.

Questions, answered

How often should I calibrate my gimbal?

Calibrate after firmware updates, hard knocks, air travel, or any persistent drift. Well-treated gimbals hold calibration for months; daily calibration is a symptom of a balance or hardware issue.

Why does my phone gimbal tilt with a wide lens attached?

Add-on lenses shift weight far from the clamp centre. Use the maker's counterweight if offered, rebalance the roll axis with the lens mounted, and expect reduced runtime.

Is a slight motor hum normal?

A faint hum under load can be normal, especially indoors in silence. Loud buzzing, shaking video or hot motors are not - rebalance and retune before continuing.
