Gimbals Buying Guide (2027)
How to choose a gimbal in 2027: phone versus pocket versus camera gimbals, payload maths, tracking systems and balancing explained.

Pick your class: phone, pocket or camera gimbal
Phone gimbals (Osmo Mobile 6, Flow 2 Pro, Smooth 5S, iSteady M6) stabilise the best camera you own - your phone - and add tracking and creative moves for the lowest total cost. The Osmo Pocket 3 is a standalone camera-gimbal with a 1-inch sensor, ideal when you want a free phone and consistent files. Camera gimbals (RS 4, RS 3 Mini, RS 4 Mini, Crane M3S, SCORP-C) serve interchangeable-lens quality and are the only route to shallow depth of field and serious lenses. Buy the class that matches the camera you will actually shoot on.
Payload: do the real maths
Weigh your complete shooting rig: body with battery, heaviest lens at its longest (zoom barrels extend and shift balance), microphone, and any cage or monitor. Then require the gimbal's tested payload to exceed that by at least 30 percent. Running at the limit causes micro-jitter, motor heat and short battery life that no firmware update fixes. Phone shooters should weigh phone plus case plus any add-on lens against the clamp and motor ratings.
Tracking systems compared
App-based tracking (DJI Mimo, Insta360 app) is accurate but confines you to that app. Apple DockKit on the Flow 2 Pro extends tracking into the native iPhone camera and hundreds of apps. Hardware AI vision sensors, like the Hohem M6 Kit's magnetic tracker, watch the subject independently and work in literally any app, including livestream and conferencing software. Solo creators and streamers should rank tracking architecture above small spec differences.
Balancing, battery and the carry test
Every camera gimbal must be balanced per lens change; quick-release plates, marked positions and auto-tune routines determine whether that is 30 seconds or 10 minutes. Battery claims assume perfect balance, so derate them by a third in your planning and prefer USB-C PD or swappable grips for long days. Finally, apply the carry test: folded size and total kit weight decide whether the gimbal travels with you or becomes shelf equipment.

Questions, answered
Are gimbals allowed on planes?
Yes, in cabin baggage with their lithium batteries, like other camera gear. Remove or secure the camera or phone in transit and use axis locks or storage modes to protect the motors.
Can a gimbal fix shaky footage entirely?
It removes rotational shake brilliantly but not vertical bounce from walking. The bent-knee heel-toe gimbal walk still matters; the gimbal hides technique flaws, it does not abolish physics.
Do I need a gimbal for real estate video?
It is the highest-value upgrade for property walkthroughs. A Pocket 3 or a phone gimbal produces the smooth forward glides listings are now expected to have.
How long do gimbal batteries really last?
Phone gimbals typically deliver a full casual day; camera gimbals under well-balanced mirrorless loads deliver most of a shoot day. Heavy or poorly balanced loads can halve rated figures.
