Fix it
Backpacking Stove Not Lighting? Fixes (2027)
Why your backpacking stove will not light or stay lit, and how to fix it: cold canisters, clogged jets, dead igniters, and wind.

A stove that will not light at a cold, hungry camp is a genuine problem, but the causes are few and mostly fixable with what's in your repair kit. Work through these in order: fuel, ignition, gas flow, then environment.
No gas flow at all
Check the canister is not empty (shake and weigh it), the stove is threaded fully onto the canister, and the valve is actually opening. Cold canisters below freezing lose pressure; warm the canister in your jacket or set it in cool (not hot) water to restore flow. A clogged jet clears with the pricker wire in your repair kit or a fine needle, worked gently into the jet orifice.
Piezo igniter clicks but stove will not light
Piezo igniters weaken with age and altitude. Hold a lighter or match at the burner edge instead, and confirm gas is flowing with a brief hiss before striking. If the igniter sparks weakly, check that the electrode gap has not bent; a small adjustment with pliers often restores a fat spark. Carry a mini lighter always; igniters are conveniences, not systems.
Flame sputters, flares yellow, or dies in wind
Yellow flare-ups usually mean liquid fuel reaching the burner from a tipped or overfilled setup; keep the canister upright and level. Sputtering in cold means pressure loss: warm the canister and shield the stove. In wind, relocate behind terrain before blaming the stove, and never wrap a canister-top stove in a full windscreen, which can overheat the canister.
Stove burns weakly as the canister empties
Unregulated stoves fade as pressure drops; that is normal physics, not failure. Finish the canister on simmer duties, cook with the canister warmed, and plan fuel so critical boils happen on fuller canisters. Pressure-regulated models like the WindMaster and WindBurner exist to flatten exactly this curve.
Questions, answered
Can I refill small canisters from big ones?
Adapters exist, but manufacturers advise against refilling disposable canisters; the valves and shells are not rated for repeated pressure cycles. Recycle empties and buy fresh fuel.
Why does my stove smell of gas when packed?
A weeping valve or a stove stored with the valve cracked open. Close the valve fully, air the stove, and if the smell persists with the valve closed, retire the stove or have it serviced; fuel leaks near sparks are not a DIY gray area.
How do I dispose of empty canisters?
Burn off residual fuel, puncture the empty canister with a proper tool, and recycle it as steel where facilities exist. Never pack out a half-full canister as trash policy; use it up first.
