Smart Lock Not Connecting or Locking (2027 Fix Guide)
Fix a smart lock that will not connect, will not lock, or drains batteries: the checks that solve most failures.

Smart lock failures cluster into three groups: connectivity, mechanical alignment, and power. Work through these in order before assuming the lock is defective; most field failures are installation or battery issues, not electronics.
Lock will not connect to WiFi or the app
Stand at the door with your phone and check signal: locks need stable 2.4 GHz, and metal doors plus masonry kill signal. Add a mesh node on the path to the door. If setup stalls, confirm the lock is in pairing mode (LED pattern in the manual), toggle phone Bluetooth, and keep the phone within a few feet during pairing.
Bolt will not extend or retract fully
This is mechanical, not electronic. A misaligned strike plate or swollen door frame binds the bolt, and the motor gives up to protect itself. With the door open, test the bolt: if it throws cleanly open but not closed, the strike needs adjusting. Loosen the strike plate, shift it to center the bolt, and consider longer 3-inch screws into the stud.
Batteries drain in weeks instead of months
Rapid drain has three usual causes: weak WiFi forcing constant reconnects, a binding bolt making the motor work overtime, or cold exposure. Fix signal and alignment first. If drain persists, check for a firmware update; several brands have shipped power-management fixes. Use lithium AA batteries, which outperform alkaline in locks.
Auto-lock fires at the wrong times
Timer-only auto-lock cannot know the door state. Shorten the timer to reduce the open-door window, or switch to a door-sensor model like the Yale with DoorSense that locks only on confirmed close. Disable auto-unlock geofencing if it triggers while you are still in the yard; the geofence radius is adjustable in most apps.
Questions, answered
Why does my lock jam only in summer?
Humidity swells wooden doors and frames, misaligning the strike by millimeters, which is enough to bind the bolt. Seasonal strike adjustment or a slightly enlarged strike mortise fixes it permanently.
The keypad works but the app does not. Why?
Keypad is local; the app needs Bluetooth or WiFi. This split points to connectivity, not the lock: check phone Bluetooth, lock WiFi signal, and whether a router change orphaned the lock onto an old network.
Should I use rechargeable batteries?
Standard rechargeables run at 1.2V versus 1.5V alkaline, and some locks misread the lower voltage as low battery. Use lithium AAs for the best life and accurate fuel gauging.
