Fix it
Rain Jacket Wetting Out or Leaking? Fixes (2027)
Why your rain jacket feels wet inside and how to fix it: DWR reactivation, seam checks, washing, and when a jacket is truly done.

Most rain jackets accused of leaking are actually wetting out: the face fabric saturates, breathability dies, and your own sweat condenses inside until you feel soaked. The membrane underneath is usually innocent. Run these fixes in order before shopping for a replacement.
Jacket feels wet inside during rain but seams look fine
Classic wet-out. Wash the jacket with a technical cleaner to strip dirt and oils from the face fabric, then tumble dry on medium heat for 20 minutes; heat reactivates most DWR finishes. Test with a cup of water: it should bead and roll off. If beading does not return, apply a wash-in or spray-on DWR reproofer and dry again.
Water enters at shoulders under pack straps
Straps press water through tired DWR and stress seam tape at the shoulders. Re-proof the DWR as above, then inspect the shoulder seam tape for lifting edges; small lifts reseal with seam sealant from any outdoor shop. Persistent shoulder soak-through on an older jacket signals a membrane at the end of its life, not a maintenance miss.
Interior coating is flaking or bubbling
That is delamination, and it is terminal for PU-coated jackets like older PreCips: the waterproof layer itself is disintegrating. There is no honest repair; retire the jacket to dry-weather wind duty and replace it. Prevent repeats by storing shells hung loose in a cool place, never compressed in a hot car or stuff sack.
Sweating heavily even with pit zips open
Check your layers first: a cotton or heavy fleece midlayer holds moisture against the shell and overwhelms any venting. Switch to light synthetic or merino layers, open every vent before you start climbing rather than after you overheat, and slow your pace by ten percent. In warm rain, many experienced hikers accept damp-from-sweat in a shell over the alternative of soaked-through with no shell at all.
Questions, answered
How often should I re-proof DWR?
Whenever water stops beading, typically once or twice a season for regular users. Washing plus tumble drying restores beading several times before a fresh reproofer is needed.
Can I repair a torn shell?
Yes. Adhesive repair patches made for technical fabrics seal tears durably and are a standard repair-kit item. Tears along seams are worth a professional repair through the maker.
When is a rain jacket truly finished?
Delaminating coatings, peeling seam tape across multiple seams, and membranes that wet through after a full wash-and-reproof cycle mark the end. Quality 3-layer shells usually give a decade of warning signs first.
