Our recommendation

Choose the Fineline Stretch if you climb, scramble, or pole in rain and want a seam-taped membrane with genuine stretch and the better hood. Choose the PreCip Eco to save serious money now; on sale it delivers most of the trail experience for years of regular use.

Construction and lifespan

This is the comparison that matters. The Fineline's BD.dry is a true waterproof-breathable laminate, fully seam-taped, rated 10,000 mm / 10,000 g/m2/24h, and laminates age gracefully with DWR care. The PreCip's PU coating performs well young and delaminates eventually, typically in three to five years. Frequent rain hikers get their money's worth from the Fineline; occasional hikers may never outlive the PreCip.

Stretch and fit

The Fineline's mechanical-stretch face and underarm gussets move with reaches and pole plants, cut trim and athletic. The PreCip's Angel-Wing Movement cut frees the arms well for a non-stretch shell, in a regular fit that layers more casually. Over a T-shirt in warm rain both are fine; on steep, reachy terrain the Fineline's stretch is the obvious difference.

Venting and details

Both have pit zips, the Fineline's at a generous 13 in. The Fineline adds a waterproof center front zipper, a helmet-compatible hood with rear volume adjustment and an extended brim, and it packs into its own right-hand pocket with a carabiner loop. PreCip Eco: 10.1 oz against the Fineline's 11.3 oz, with a roll-up hood and the friendliest price in branded shells. The Fineline costs more and weighs an ounce more; what you get back is membrane, stretch, and hood.

Choose Black Diamond Fineline Stretch Rain Jacket if…

  • You hike in rain monthly or more
  • You scramble, climb, or pole and want stretch
  • Hood performance matters, with or without a helmet

Choose Marmot PreCip Eco if…

  • Budget leads and sales shrink the gap further
  • You are new to hiking and still learning your needs
  • You want the lighter jacket for fair-weather insurance

Questions, answered

Which is more waterproof?

Both keep trail rain out when new. The Fineline's laminate sustains that performance far longer than the PreCip's PU coating, which ages with use and storage.

Which breathes better?

Both have pit zips, which dominate real-world venting. With zips closed, the Fineline's BD.dry laminate edges ahead of the PreCip's coating.

Is the Fineline worth paying more for?

For regular rain hikers who move hard, yes, on stretch, hood, and membrane lifespan alone. For occasional use, the PreCip Eco is the rational buy.
