Instant film forgives very little, so a run of dark or blown-out prints usually has a mechanical cause: flash distance, a dirty light sensor, cold film, or a subject placed against a bright window. Work through these fixes before blaming the camera - most bad packs trace back to one of them.

Faces are dark and backgrounds are black indoors

You are beyond flash range or the room is swallowing the light. Move within about 0.5 to 2 metres of your subject on Mini and Square bodies, turn on every room light, and place the subject near a light wall that bounces flash back. On Polaroid bodies, let the auto exposure settle and avoid shooting across large dark rooms.

Close-up faces are blown out white

The flash is too close and too strong. Switch to close-up or selfie mode, which trims flash output on cameras like the Mini 12 and SQ1, step back to arm length or beyond, and angle the camera slightly so the flash does not fire straight into the face at point-blank range.

Prints come out blank, streaked or uneven

Check the film first: expired, heat-damaged or X-rayed film, and opening the camera back mid-pack, are the usual culprits. Never open the back until the counter reaches zero. Clean the rollers gently with a dry cloth if streaks repeat across packs, and store film cool and flat.

Polaroid colours shift blue or pink

That is development temperature, not a defect. Develop the print face-down in a warm inside pocket in cold weather and in shade in hot weather, shield it from light for the first minutes, and give it the full 10 to 15 minutes before judging colour or sharpness.

Questions, answered

Why is there a dark spot in the corner of my Instax photos?

Usually a finger over the lens or flash, or the light sensor beside the lens being covered. Grip the body by its edges and check the sensor window is clean and uncovered.

Can I fix an already-dark print?

No. The chemical print is final. Hybrids are the prevention: review the digital frame and reprint a corrected exposure on models like the Mini Evo.

Does old film really expire?

Yes. Past-date film loses contrast and colour accuracy, Polaroid fastest. Buy fresh, store cool, and shoot oldest packs first.
