Cat Litter and Litter Trays

The best kitty litter is the one your cat will use happily and you can live with daily. Clumping clay is the default for a reason: it forms firm, scoopable clumps, controls odor well, and most cats accept its sand-like texture. Crystal litter made from silica gel absorbs urine instead of clumping it, so it lasts longer between full changes and tracks less, while plant-based options such as corn and wood fiber are lighter, lower in dust, and often flushable or compostable where local rules allow.

Odor control, dust, and tracking decide day-to-day satisfaction more than brand names do. Scented formulas mask smells for people but can push scent-sensitive cats away, so unscented litters with clay, charcoal, or baking soda are the safer start. Tray sizing matters just as much in multi-cat homes: the standard rule is one tray per cat plus one extra, each tray should be about one and a half times your cat's length, and two cats sharing undersized or too few trays is the most common reason for messes outside the box.
