A cat that stops using the tray or trails litter through every room is usually reporting a fixable problem with the setup, not misbehaving. Work through these checks in order, and remember that a sudden change in litter habits, especially straining or crying, is a reason to see a vet promptly rather than only adjusting litter.

Not enough trays, or trays in the wrong place

Apply the one-per-cat-plus-one rule and spread trays across separate quiet, always-accessible spots away from food, water, and noisy appliances. A single tray shared by two cats, or trays lined up side by side, reads as one contested resource and is the most common cause of avoidance in multi-cat homes.

Tray is too small, too dirty, or cleaned with strong scents

Size up to a tray about one and a half times your cat's length, scoop at least daily, keep litter 3 to 4 inches deep, and wash the tray with mild unscented soap. Strongly scented cleaners and liners can repel the cat you are trying to attract, and a cramped tray guarantees misses over the edge.

A recent litter change triggered avoidance

Cats bond to texture and scent. Return to the previous litter immediately to restore use, then transition gradually over a week by mixing increasing amounts of the new litter, keeping one tray of the old litter available throughout. Unscented, fine-grained clumping litter is the safest reset point.

Litter tracked through the whole house

Switch to a larger-particle low-tracking litter such as crystals or wood fiber, add a high-sided or top-entry tray, and place a large textured mat that extends well beyond the tray exit. Shake and wash the mat weekly, keep depth moderate, and sweep the litter zone daily; together these steps cut tracking dramatically even if no single one eliminates it.

Questions, answered

When is litter box avoidance a vet problem?

Immediately, if your cat strains, cries, visits often with little result, or produces blood-tinged urine; those signs need prompt veterinary care. Any sudden habit change in a previously reliable cat also deserves a vet check before behavior fixes.

Should I punish a cat for going outside the tray?

No. Punishment increases stress and makes avoidance worse. Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner, fix the tray setup using the steps above, and reward calm tray use with a normal, relaxed routine.

Does a covered box help or hurt?

It depends on the cat. Covers contain scatter and odor for people, but they also trap odor inside for the cat and can feel like a trap to a cat in a multi-cat home. Offer one covered and one open tray and let the cat vote.
