Backpacking Backpacks
Multi-day packs ranked on suspension, fit, and load carrying.
A backpacking pack's job is to move weight from your shoulders to your hips without hot spots or sway. The numbers that matter are torso-fit adjustability, the suspension system's load rating, total weight, and capacity in liters. A 65-liter pack at 4 lb 11 oz and a 58-liter pack at 2 lb 13 oz can both be excellent; they serve different load ranges and hiking styles.
The ten packs below span 50 to 65 liters, the sweet spot for 3-to-5-day trips, in both premium suspended designs and budget workhorses. Every capacity and weight cited comes from manufacturer specifications.
Fit decides more than features. Measure your torso from the C7 vertebra to the iliac crest before ordering, because most packs here come in sizes or adjust across that range, and a pack sized wrong cannot be fixed with strap tension. A correct fit puts the great majority of the load on your hip bones, with the shoulder straps steadying rather than carrying, and the load lifters angled so the pack rides close instead of pulling you backward. If you can, test with real weight inside: an empty pack in a living room tells you almost nothing about mile fifteen.
