Start with your roof's real limits

Your vehicle manual lists a dynamic roof load limit, and it includes the carrier itself. A 50 lb box on a 130 lb limit leaves 80 lb of cargo, however big the box looks. Next, measure crossbar spread against the carrier's mounting range, and check hatch clearance: mount position decides whether the hatch opens fully or kisses the box. These three checks prevent nearly every roof-cargo return.

Box versus bag is a frequency question

Monthly travelers should buy the hard box: lockable, fully weatherproof, quieter, and loaded in minutes with modern clamps. A few trips a year favors the bag: similar volume, no rack required for some models, and it stores in a closet instead of dominating a garage. Be honest about frequency; aspirational box purchases become expensive wall art.

Read waterproofing as a method, not a word

Hard shells seal completely, full stop. Among bags, sealed-style carrier construction (Rightline Gear) beats basic stitched-and-taped builds, and zipper storm flaps matter at highway speed where rain is driven horizontally. Waterproof in a listing title is unregulated; the construction description is the evidence. For anything that must arrive dry in all weather, add a dry-bag liner inside any soft carrier.

Pack and drive like the load is up there

Heavy items low and centered between the crossbars, soft items filling the shaped ends of boxes and the corners of bags. Tension every strap, tuck every loose end, and recheck at the first stop; straps settle. Remove the carrier between trips: it restores fuel economy, saves the seals and fabric from UV, and removes the garage-height gamble from daily life.

Questions, answered

How big a carrier do I need?

For a family of four on a week-long trip, 16-18 cu ft is the working size. Couples manage with 11-16. When in doubt, lay your trip luggage on the floor in a rectangle and measure it; volume guesses are always optimistic.

Can I exceed the speed limit recommendations?

Carriers carry their own guidance and your car carries a roof limit; respect both. A properly mounted box is stable at legal highway speeds, which is the entire design brief.

Do roof carriers work with a sunroof?

Generally yes for viewing, but opening a sunroof under a low box or a bare-roof bag is usually blocked or unwise. Check clearance before assuming tilt-and-slide still functions.

Are used roof boxes a good deal?

Often, yes: boxes age slowly. Inspect the shell for cracks, confirm both keys exist, and verify the mounting hardware is complete, since replacement clamps can erase the savings.
