A jump starter that will not charge is usually a victim of neglect, not failure: deep discharge from years in the trunk, a bad cable, or a charger mismatch. Work through these fixes before replacing the unit.

Unit shows no signs of life on the charger

Try a different cable and a different wall adapter first; micro-USB and USB-C cables fail silently. If the pack uses a proprietary barrel charger, confirm the adapter matches the voltage on the label. Leave it charging for a full 24 hours: deeply discharged lithium packs can take hours before the indicator wakes up.

Charges to full but dies in storage within weeks

This is normal for aging lithium and for all lead-acid packs. Lithium units should hold months; if yours drops in weeks, the cells are worn and the pack needs replacement. Lead-acid models like shop units need a maintenance charge every 1 to 3 months by design.

Shows full charge but cannot crank the engine

Charge indicators measure voltage, not cranking ability. A worn pack can read full yet collapse under starter-motor load. Clean the battery terminals and clamp contact points, since corrosion steals current. If clean connections and a full charge still fail on an engine within the unit's rating, the cells are spent.

Clamps spark or the unit refuses to engage

Refusal to engage with reversed clamps is the safety system working: swap the clamps to the correct terminals. If it refuses with correct polarity, the clamps may not be making contact through corrosion or paint; bite into clean metal. Persistent refusal on a known-good battery means the pack's internal protection has tripped or failed.

Questions, answered

Can a dead jump starter be revived?

Sometimes. A long slow charge can wake deeply discharged lithium. A pack that will not hold charge after that has worn cells and should be replaced.

How should I store it?

Charged to 50 to 100 percent, in moderate temperatures, checked twice a year. Avoid baking summers in the trunk when possible.

Is it safe to keep charging overnight?

Quality packs have overcharge protection, but unplug once full as a habit, especially with older units.
