Our recommendation

Buy the M12 FUEL 3453-20 for near-18V power, four modes, and the vast M12 ecosystem. Buy the Bosch PS42 when smallest size, lightest weight, and gentle two-speed control matter more than headline torque.

Power gap

Milwaukee's 1,500 in-lb and 4,000 IPM roughly double the Bosch's driving muscle at 975 in-lb and 3,100 IPM. The Bosch is calibrated for hardware; the Milwaukee happily builds small decks.

Size and weight

The PS42 at 5.4 inches and about 1.6 lb with battery is the smaller tool. The M12 FUEL at 5.1 inches is shorter but carries a larger battery footprint at the grip base.

Ecosystem

M12 is the largest 12V system in North America, with hundreds of tools. Bosch 12V Max is smaller but excellent in woodworking and install niches. Future tool plans matter here.

Choose Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3453-20 if…

  • You want one 12V driver that can also do light construction
  • You plan to grow into the M12 system
  • Self-tapping mode for sheet metal and HVAC work appeals to you

Choose Bosch PS42 12V Max EC Brushless if…

  • Cabinet and furniture hardware is your main work
  • Lightest possible overhead tool matters most
  • You already own Bosch 12V Max batteries

Questions, answered

Which fits better inside cabinets?

Both fit; the Bosch's lighter weight and smaller battery base maneuver slightly easier in assembled boxes.

Is the Milwaukee too strong for 12V work?

No, because mode 1 and its trigger control are genuinely gentle. The power is there when a hanging screw hits a stud.

Which batteries cost less?

Bosch 12V packs are often cheaper individually; Milwaukee wins on variety and frequent kit promotions.
