The Best Mattress Toppers (2027)

A mattress topper is the highest-leverage upgrade in sleep: a 2 to 4 inch comfort layer that can soften a too-firm mattress, add pressure relief to an aging one, or buy you a year or two before a full replacement. At a fraction of a mattress price, the value math is compelling.

This guide compares the best toppers across materials and thicknesses, from premium TEMPUR comfort to budget gel foam, judging each on real comfort change, cooling, and whether it actually stays put through the night.

Start by naming the exact problem, because each problem points to a different pick below. A sound mattress that is simply too firm needs contouring thickness, which is where the TEMPUR-Adapt and the 4-inch Sleep Innovations design earn their places. A guest bed or dorm mattress that only needs to feel less harsh needs far less, and the Linenspa or LUCID gel toppers handle that job without overspending. Heat changes the answer again: foam of any kind adds insulation, so warm sleepers should look hard at the latex options from Turmerry and Sleep On Latex, whose open, responsive material sheds heat in a way gel infusions only approximate. Couples should also weigh motion transfer, since a topper that softens one side of the bed will be felt on the other unless the foam absorbs movement well.
