Fix it
Why Your Mattress Topper Keeps Sliding (2027)
Why mattress toppers slide off and how to fix it: straps, sheets, friction fixes, and sizing.

A topper that migrates nightly is usually a fit problem, not a product defect. These fixes address the actual mechanics of topper movement, from free to replacement-level.
The topper bunches toward the middle
Your fitted sheet is too loose. Switch to deep-pocket sheets sized for the combined mattress-plus-topper height; the sheet's tension is what locks the topper down. Hospital corners pulled tight make a visible difference.
The topper slides on a smooth mattress cover
Place a non-slip rug pad or shelf liner between the mattress and topper. The added friction stops the low-friction slide that smooth covers encourage, a fix costing almost nothing.
Corners lift and fold over
Use sheet suspenders or topper straps that clip under the mattress corners. These triangulated elastic straps hold each corner independently and survive tossing that defeats friction alone.
The topper is the wrong size
A topper smaller than the mattress will always migrate; a larger one bunches. Verify the topper matches your mattress size exactly, and replace it if not. Sizing is the one fix no accessory can substitute for.
An adjustable base keeps flexing it loose
Every time an adjustable base raises the head or foot, the topper bends with the mattress and then settles a fraction of an inch away from where it started, so a topper that stays put on a flat bed can walk steadily on a moving one. Counter it at the corners, where the movement starts: use straps or a fitted protector that wraps both the topper and the mattress together as one unit, and re-center the topper after any long session spent sitting up in bed. Toppers with their own corner straps, like the Dormeo design in our main guide, handle base movement noticeably better than strapless foam that relies on sheet tension alone.
One partner drags the topper sideways
If the shift always favors one side of the bed, look at how that sleeper gets in and out. Sliding across the surface, rather than lifting and turning, applies a nightly sideways pull that no friction pad fully resists. A protector or fitted sheet with a deeper, tighter pocket reduces the travel, and sheet suspenders clipped diagonally, corner to opposite corner under the mattress, resist a one-direction drag better than straps clipped straight down. If the topper only moves after restless nights, treat it as a weekly re-centering chore rather than a defect: lift the bedding, square the topper to the mattress corners, and remake the bed with the sheet pulled evenly on both sides.
Questions, answered
Should toppers have straps?
Straps help significantly. When choosing between otherwise equal toppers, prefer the one with corner straps or a fitted-skirt design.
Will a mattress protector help?
A fitted waterproof protector over the topper adds a stabilizing layer and protects the foam, serving double duty.
Why does only one side slide?
Uneven getting in and out of bed drags one side. Straps or a non-slip layer fix asymmetric movement specifically.
