Shells get the marketing, but wheels and handles end trips. The good news: many failures are field-fixable, and most are preventable with two habits. Work through these before declaring a case dead at the worst possible moment.

Spinner wheel snapped off

Mid-trip: the case still works as a two-wheeler tilted onto its remaining pair, or flat-dragged short distances. Protect the exposed corner with tape so the shell does not grind. At home, many brands sell replacement wheel assemblies held by screws inside the lining; check before replacing the whole case, and claim airline damage immediately if it happened in their custody.

Telescoping handle stuck down or up

Debris or a bent inner tube is the usual cause. Work the release button while rocking the handle gently, never forcing it; a drop of silicone lubricant at the tube joints frees gritty slides. A handle stuck up can fly as-is in the hold if protected; a handle stuck down can be pulled with the top carry handle taped for grip as a short-term measure.

Handle wobble getting worse

Play develops at the handle's internal stops. Tightening is rarely user-accessible on modern cases, so this is a warranty or repair-shop item on quality sets, and an accepted wear signal on budget ones. Slow it down: never lift a loaded case by the extended telescoping handle; use the fixed carry handles for lifts.

Shell crack at a corner

Drill-stop the crack ends with a tiny hole if you must keep using the case this trip, then seal inside and out with strong tape or epoxy patch. It is a field repair, not a restoration: polycarbonate cracks are warranty conversations, ABS cracks are usually the case's retirement, and both are reasons to photograph and report airline damage before leaving the airport.

Questions, answered

How do I prevent wheel damage?

Lift the case over curbs, cobbles, and escalator lips rather than dragging spinners across them. Most wheel deaths are impact events, not rolling wear.

Should I file an airline damage claim?

Yes, at the baggage desk before leaving the airport, with photos. Windows are short and after-the-fact claims are routinely denied.

Are replacement wheels universal?

No, they are brand and model specific. Photograph the assembly and measure screw spacing before ordering.
