Fix it
IPL Not Working? No Results Fixes (2027)
Why at-home IPL shows no results and how to fix it: suitability, shaving prep, level choice, session spacing, and contact errors.

IPL disappointment usually traces to one of five fixable causes, not a broken lamp. Before concluding the category failed you, audit your routine against these checks in order; suitability first, because no technique overcomes physics.
No reduction after 4 to 6 sessions
Verify suitability honestly: hair must be dark brown or black against lighter skin. Light brown, dark blonde, and sun-darkened skin all shrink contrast and slow results dramatically. If you are in range, extend judgment to week 10 to 12; early sessions mainly thin growth, and patchy cycles mean some follicles were dormant during your first passes.
Hair grows back as fast as ever between sessions
Check prep and spacing. You must shave closely the day of treatment, never wax or epilate during a course, and hold the weekly (or device-specified) cadence. Gaps let synchronized regrowth re-establish. Also confirm you are overlapping placements slightly rather than leaving untreated stripes that read as total failure.
Device will not flash or keeps stopping
Contact and tone sensors are doing their job: the window must sit flush with full skin contact, and bony curves like ankles and knees break the seal. Flatten skin with your free hand, use stamp mode on curves, and clean the window, since residue and stray hairs block sensors. On tanned skin the lockout may be permanent until the tan fades.
Treatment hurts or leaves marks
Drop one to two levels, ensure skin is clean, dry, and product-free, and never flash the same spot twice in a session. Cooling models should have cooling active before contact. Lingering marks beyond 48 hours mean stop, let skin recover fully, and re-check your tone against the chart before resuming at the lowest level.
Questions, answered
Can I increase levels to speed results?
Only within your chart's range and after comfortable sessions. Higher levels help coarse hair modestly; burns help nothing and pause your course.
Why do some areas respond slower?
Hormonally influenced and coarse areas, bikini, chin, underarms, commonly lag legs. They need the full course plus patient touch-ups.
Should treated hair fall out immediately?
No. Treated hairs shed over 1 to 2 weeks as the follicle releases them. Gentle exfoliation after several days helps; never force them.
