When a cooling sheet stops cooling, the fiber is usually fine and the surface is not: fabric softener film, detergent residue, dryer heat damage, or a new heat-trapping layer elsewhere in the bed. These fixes restore most sets before you replace them.

Sheets feel waxy and stop wicking

That is fabric softener or dryer-sheet coating sealing the fibers. Strip it with a hot wash for synthetics, or a warm gentle wash for bamboo and Tencel, using a cup of white vinegar in the rinse and no detergent in the second cycle. Then ban softeners from all performance bedding permanently.

Bamboo or Tencel sheets pilling and feeling rough

Heat and friction are the causes: hot water, high dryer settings, and washing with towels or jeans. Wash inside out in a mesh bag, cold and gentle, with only smooth fabrics, and dry low. Existing pills can be removed with a fabric shaver, but prevention is the real fix.

Cool-touch sheet no longer feels cold

First, strip-wash the set to remove residue, which restores much of the contact effect. Then check room temperature: Q-Max fabrics feel coldest with a clear temperature difference from skin, so a warm room dulls the chill no matter the fabric.

Still sleeping hot despite cooling sheets

Audit the system. A waterproof protector, a memory foam topper, or a heavy duvet each traps more heat than a sheet can offset. Switch to a thin breathable protector, check the duvet's seasonal weight, and judge the sheets again for two nights before replacing them.

Questions, answered

Can heat-damaged bamboo be saved?

Pilling can be shaved and residue stripped, but shrunken or thinned viscose does not recover. Treat it as a lesson and wash the next set cold.

Is vinegar safe for Tencel and bamboo?

Yes, in the rinse cycle at normal household strength; it removes residue without coating fibers and is a standard recommendation for performance fabrics.

When should cooling sheets be replaced?

When the fabric thins, pills return immediately after care fixes, or wicking no longer recovers after a strip wash. Expect two to four years from natural fibers with good care.
