Fix it
Camera Strap Slipping, Swinging or Hurting? Fixes (2027)
Fix camera strap problems: shoulder pad creep, camera swing and clinking, neck pain, loose socket connectors and worn anchor cords.

Most strap misery is adjustment, not equipment: a pad positioned wrong, lengths set for standing still rather than moving, or a connector slowly loosening. Work through these fixes with your actual shooting clothes and kit before replacing a strap that may be one tweak from perfect.
Shoulder pad keeps sliding and rotating
Position the pad on the shoulder point, not the neck slope, and route the strap under a backpack strap or jacket layer when moving. On slings, add or tighten the underarm stabiliser if your model offers one - the BlackRapid Brad exists precisely for this - and wear the grippy face of dual-surface straps like the Slide against your clothing.
Camera swings, bounces and bangs your hip
Shorten the carry length so the camera rests at the top of your hip bone, cinch sling adjusters for transit and release them only to shoot, and keep a resting hand on the body in crowds. Persistent bounce with heavy kits is a geometry problem: move to a hub-locked carry like the Cotton Carrier Skout G2, which eliminates swing entirely.
Two harness cameras clink together while walking
Stagger the resting heights by adjusting each side independently so the bodies never share a level, and turn lenses to face backward or downward per your harness maker's guidance. Then re-run a stairs-and-crouch walk test; silence at home predicts silence at the ceremony.
Socket connector feels loose or anchor cords look fuzzy
Stop and fix it now: re-tighten FastenR-style screws firmly by hand, check the carabiner gate locks, and replace any Anchor cord showing its inner wear colour or surface fuzz. These are the two documented failure precursors in strap systems, and both are cheap, immediate fixes compared with a dropped body.
Questions, answered
Why does my neck still hurt with a padded strap?
Padding cushions pressure but the neck still bears the load. For kits over about 1.5 kg, change geometry - sling or harness - rather than adding more padding.
How tight should a sling be while shooting?
Loose enough to raise the camera to your eye without the strap binding, tight enough that the camera rests on your hip at rest. The two-position adjuster habit - cinch to walk, release to shoot - is the sling skill worth practising.
Can I wash a camera strap?
Webbing straps hand-wash in mild soap and air-dry fully. Neoprene pads wipe clean. Leather harnesses should never be soaked; clean and condition them as leather goods.
