Leak detectors fail in two directions: alerting when nothing is wrong, which trains you to ignore them, and staying silent during a real drip, which is worse. Both failures are usually placement and maintenance, not defective hardware. Diagnose by failure type.

Alerts with no visible leak

Check for condensation: cold pipes sweat in humid basements and drip exactly like leaks. Inspect at alert time, dry the contacts, and if condensation is the culprit, insulate the pipe and raise the humidity-alert threshold where the app allows. A sensor on a cold slab can also trigger from surface condensation after weather swings.

A real drip never triggered the sensor

Water followed the floor slope away from the puck; leaks obey gravity, not your placement hopes. Find the actual low point by watching a small test pour, move the sensor there, or upgrade that spot to a cable sensor like the Lyric that covers the whole path. Under appliances, slide the probe to the rear corners where hoses connect.

Phone alerts stopped arriving

Work the chain: sensor battery, then gateway or hub power, then router, then phone notification permissions. Direct Wi-Fi sensors die silently when batteries fade; enable low-battery alerts in the app and set a yearly replacement month for the whole fleet so no sensor ages alone.

Siren sounds but will not reset after an event

Contacts or cable are still wet, or residue bridges the probes. Dry everything thoroughly, wipe contacts with a clean cloth, and for cable sensors allow hours, not minutes, since the cable wicks moisture. If a cleaned, dry sensor still alarms, inspect the cable for damage that traps water internally.

Questions, answered

Can pets or cleaning trigger sensors?

Mop water and pet bowls are honest water; sensors cannot judge intent. Place sensors just outside routine splash zones, at the drip paths of pipes and valves.

Why did my freeze alert fire on a mild day?

The sensor spot, an exterior-wall cabinet or unheated crawlspace, can run far colder than the thermostat room. Treat the alert as local truth and insulate that run.

How do I test without flooding the floor?

A damp fingertip or wet paper towel across the contacts triggers every model here. Confirm siren, app alert, and any valve automation in one quarterly drill.
