Travel Pillow Gone Flat (2027): Fixes and Care Tips
Travel pillow lost its loft or support? Four fixes and care routines to restore foam, fix straps, and extend pillow life.

Foam compresses, covers get grimy, and straps stretch. These four fixes address the most common travel pillow problems and the care habits that prevent them.
Memory foam went flat
Remove the cover and let the foam air out uncompressed for 24 hours; foam recovers some loft with rest. Fluff and knead it gently to redistribute the cells. If it stays flat, the foam is spent: replace the pillow, since dead foam provides no support. Store foam pillows uncompressed at home to slow this.
Cover smells after trips
Machine wash the removable cover on gentle with mild detergent and air dry. For the foam core, spot clean with a damp cloth and baking soda, then air dry completely before reassembling; never machine wash memory foam. A washable spare cover doubles hygienic life.
Straps slip or will not stay adjusted
Re-thread straps through the adjusters fully; partial threading slips under load. If elastic straps have stretched, hand wash in hot water can temporarily restore some elasticity, but stretched elastic is a wear item: contact the manufacturer about replacement straps before replacing the pillow.
Pillow too bulky to pack
Use the compression bag if included, and roll rather than fold foam pillows to expel air evenly. For structured wraps, wear the pillow through the airport instead of packing it. If bulk remains a dealbreaker, the packed size is telling you the design does not fit your travel style: consider the Trtl or Therm-a-Rest instead.
Questions, answered
Can I put a memory foam pillow in the dryer?
No. Heat damages memory foam structure. Air dry covers and spot-cleaned cores away from direct heat, with good airflow.
Why does my new pillow smell?
Off-gassing from manufacturing; it fades in a few days of airing out. Wash the cover before first use and let the core air for 24 hours.
When should I replace my travel pillow?
When foam no longer rebounds, support ribs feel uneven, or the cover cannot be cleaned fresh. For frequent travelers, that is typically every 2 to 3 years.
