Fix it
Smart Plug Not Responding? Fixes (2027)
Why smart plugs go unresponsive and how to fix it: power state, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, relay clicks, and overload resets.

A smart plug has two failure modes: the radio is unreachable, or the relay is not switching. The app usually blurs them into one grey icon. These fixes separate the two, starting with the 30-second checks, before you factory-reset and rebuild your automations for no reason.
App says offline but the manual button works
The relay and power are fine; the Wi-Fi link dropped. Confirm the plug is on a 2.4GHz network, reboot the router once, and give the plug ten minutes to rejoin before touching setup. If dropouts repeat, the plug sits at the edge of coverage; move an access point closer rather than replacing the plug.
Plug clicks but the lamp stays off
You hear the relay, so control works and the load side is the issue: test the lamp in a plain outlet, confirm the lamp own switch is on, and check the plug rating against the load. A plug that clicked happily for a fan may have welded contacts after a motor surge; retire any plug that clicks without switching under a known-good load.
Plug shut off and will not turn back on under a heater
Metering plugs like the SONOFF S31 enforce overload thresholds, and thermal protection can latch off an overheated plug. Unplug the load, let the plug cool fully, check your threshold settings, and never defeat the protection: repeated trips mean the load exceeds what the plug should carry.
Schedules fire at the wrong time after travel or DST
The plug timezone lives in the app account or the plug location setting. Update the home location in the brand app, toggle the schedule off and on to re-sync, and prefer sunrise and sunset triggers where offered, since they self-correct with the seasons.
Questions, answered
Should I factory reset an unresponsive plug?
Only after power, coverage, and account checks, because a reset erases schedules and metering history on most models and re-pairing a coverage problem changes nothing.
Why does my plug buzz or feel warm?
Warmth under heavy load near the rating is common; buzzing or heat at light load is not. Remove it from service, especially on heater duty, and replace with a properly rated model.
Can a firmware update brick a plug?
Rarely, and major brands recover automatically. Never power-cycle a plug mid-update; give it fifteen minutes before intervening.
