Security Camera False Alerts and Night Vision Fixes (2027)
Fix false motion alerts and poor night vision: zones, sensitivity, and placement fixes that actually work.

Two complaints dominate outdoor camera ownership: endless false alerts and useless night footage. Both are almost always configuration and placement, not hardware failure. These fixes address the root causes in order of impact.
Dozens of false motion alerts daily
Switch from all-motion to person detection if your camera classifies objects; this single change eliminates most shadow and vegetation alerts. Then draw activity zones that exclude streets, sidewalks, and swaying trees. Finally, lower motion sensitivity one notch at a time until cars stop triggering but people still do. Cameras with radar or PIR plus video verification false-alarm far less than video-only models.
Night footage is dark or washed out
Washed-out faces mean the infrared is reflecting off a nearby wall or soffit; angle the camera away from close surfaces. Dark footage beyond 20 feet exceeds the IR range; add the camera spotlight or a separate motion light, which also enables color night vision. Clean the lens: spider webs and dust scatter IR and ruin night images disproportionately.
Camera keeps going offline
Outdoor cameras live at the edge of WiFi range. Check signal at the mount with your phone; anything under two bars needs a mesh node moved closer or a camera repositioned. Metal siding and brick kill signal; mounting the camera just around the corner from the router side helps. If only one camera drops, swap its position with a working one to isolate camera versus location.
Recordings miss the action
Clip-based cameras wake on motion, which costs a second or two; fast events at the frame edge get clipped. Widen the activity zone beyond the area of interest so the camera wakes earlier, and enable pre-roll buffering if offered (Arlo and others buffer a few seconds before the trigger). For critical entries, a wired camera with continuous recording never misses.
Questions, answered
Why do spiders love my camera?
Infrared LEDs attract insects, and spiders follow the food. Wipe the housing with a dryer sheet or apply a thin band of petroleum jelly around (not on) the lens area; both deter web building. The spotlight models attract fewer web builders than IR-only cameras.
Can I improve night vision without new hardware?
Yes: clean the lens, remove IR-reflecting surfaces from the frame, and add any existing porch light to the scene. A basic motion bulb near the camera often improves night footage more than a camera upgrade.
Why is live view fine but recordings bad?
Live view streams at higher bitrate than stored clips on some systems. Check the recording quality setting in the app; several brands default stored clips below live quality to save cloud storage. Raise it if your plan allows.
