Robot Lawn Mowers Buying Guide (2027)
How to choose a robot lawn mower in 2027: measuring your lawn, slopes, navigation types, and total cost explained.

Measure the grass, not the lot
Lot size misleads: subtract the house footprint, driveway, beds, and patios to get turf area, which is often half the lot. Then derate the mower marketing maximum to two-thirds for real lawns with obstacles and passages. Buying for the derated number, not the headline number, is the difference between a mower that finishes daily and one that never catches up.
Slope decides before price does
Measure the steepest sustained section with a phone level app and compare against grade ratings as hard limits: 30 percent for basic models, 50 percent for premium two-wheel, 80 percent for all-wheel drive. A mower run past its rating slides, beaches, or tears turf. When in doubt between two models, the one rated for your slope wins regardless of other features.
Navigation: wire-free default, wire where it earns it
Wire-free GPS/RTK is the 2027 default for good reason: faster setup, trivial zone edits, and no wire breaks. Boundary wire still earns its place under heavy tree canopy where satellites struggle, and on simple lawns where the install is genuinely one afternoon. Match the navigation to the canopy and the complexity, not to the marketing.
Total cost versus the alternatives
Price the mower against a season of lawn service or the value of your mowing weekends: most buyers break even in one to two seasons. Add blades (monthly in heavy use), eventual battery replacement in year 4 to 6, and optional theft insurance for premium models. The math favors robots strongly for anyone currently paying for service.

Questions, answered
Will it stripe my lawn?
Systematic-pattern mowers (wire-free GPS/RTK models) stripe visibly. Random-bounce mowers cut evenly but without stripes. If stripes matter, buy systematic navigation.
What about dog poop?
The eternal question. Vision-equipped models increasingly detect and avoid it; older and basic models do not. Scoop before mow days regardless: no sensor is perfect, and the cleanup failure mode is legendary.
Can it mow at night?
Technically yes and quietly, but night mowing risks hedgehogs and nocturnal wildlife. Schedule daytime mowing; the lawn does not care and the wildlife thanks you.
Do I still need a trimmer?
Yes. Robot mowers do not edge: keep a string trimmer for borders, around trees, and along fences. The robot handles the field; you handle the detailing in a fraction of the old time.
