Mechanics Tool Sets

A mechanics tool set is the foundation of every garage: sockets, ratchets, and wrenches in the three drive sizes that cover nearly every bolt you will meet. The difference between a good set and a frustrating one is rarely the piece count on the box; it is ratchet tooth count, socket tolerances, and whether the case survives being dragged across concrete.

This guide compares the four sets that dominate home garages on specs that decide daily usability: 72-tooth ratchets with tight 5-degree swings, 6-point sockets that grip instead of rounding, and drive coverage across 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch. Below you will find ranked picks, head-to-head comparisons, and the framework for buying the right set the first time.
