A protector rarely fails all at once. Waterproofing fades through heat-damaged membrane patches, detergent films, and corners that no longer seal. Here is how to diagnose which failure you have and whether it is fixable.

Water soaks through after months of use

Test first: lay the protector over a dry towel, pour a quarter cup of water in the center, and wait ten minutes. A damp towel means membrane damage, most often from high dryer heat or bleach, and that damage is permanent. Replace it, and dry the new one on low forever; that single habit doubles membrane life.

Spills run off the edge instead of absorbing

Detergent and softener residue can seal a terry surface so liquid beads and escapes sideways. Strip wash with hot water for synthetics or warm for cotton, plus a vinegar rinse, no detergent in the final cycle. Absorbency usually returns immediately.

Protector corners pop off and expose the mattress

Measure your true mattress depth including the topper; protectors sized for the bare mattress creep off under tension. Move up a pocket depth, choose a model with all-around elastic like the Lucid, or add sheet suspender straps on the corners of adjustable bases.

Encasement zipper gap lets allergens in

Inspect the zipper end stop: the last centimeter is where encasements fail. Reseat the slider fully, secure the end with the provided closure or a small fabric tie, and confirm no fabric is caught in the teeth. A torn zipper means replacement; there is no honest patch for a bed-bug seal.

Questions, answered

How long should waterproofing last?

Two to five years for quality fitted protectors with low-heat care; far less under hot drying. Encasements washed rarely can protect for many years.

Can I re-waterproof a protector?

Spray-on repellents restore surface beading, not a delaminated membrane. Once the barrier layer itself is damaged, replacement is the honest fix.

Is a leaking protector a warranty claim?

Often yes within the term, especially for brands like Lucid with long warranties. Keep purchase records and describe care honestly; heat damage may be excluded.
