Our recommendation
Buy the On-Grid for city days, laptop duty, and weather protection in a smaller packed size. Buy the In and Out 19 for maximum carry comfort and three extra liters on dry trails. These are the two premium packables; itinerary is the tiebreaker.
Weather protection
The Matador's UTS-coated Robic shell is properly weatherproof. The Mystery Ranch uses durable Cordura with ordinary water resistance. In sustained rain this is the widest gap between the two packs.
Carry and capacity
Nineteen liters and benchmark straps give the Mystery Ranch the load-carrying win. The Matador answers with organization: an internal laptop sleeve and bottle pockets in 16 disciplined liters. Full trail loads lean Ranch; mixed city days lean Matador.
Packed size and weight
The Matador packs into its own pocket at roughly half the Mystery Ranch's weight, 213 g versus 422 g. In tight luggage, that difference decides what else you bring.
Choose Matador On-Grid Packable Backpack if…

Choose Mystery Ranch In and Out 19 if…
- You hike full days with real loads
- You value strap comfort above all
- Your trips are mostly dry
Questions, answered
Which lasts longer?
Both are premium builds. Cordura abrasion resistance favors the Ranch on rock; the Matador's UTS-coated Robic favors its contents in wet weather.
Which is better for travel days in cities?
The Matador, for its laptop sleeve, smaller packed size, and weatherproofing against city downpours.
Can either carry a laptop?
The Matador has an internal laptop sleeve, unusual for a packable. The Ranch fits one physically but offers no sleeve or padding.
