Litter Box Not Cleaning? Fixes for 2027
Self-cleaning litter box stuck or not cycling? Fixes for sensor errors, jams, rake stalls, and odor problems.

When an automatic box stops cycling, the cause is usually a dirty sensor, low litter, a jam, or a full waste drawer. Work through these fixes before assuming a hardware failure.
Box will not start a cleaning cycle
Empty the waste drawer or replace the tray, since full indicators halt cycling. Check that litter is at the fill line; low litter confuses weight sensors. Wipe the sensors clean with a dry cloth, as dust and litter film are the most common cause of false readings. Then run a manual cycle from the app or button.
Cleaning cycle stalls halfway
Unplug the unit and clear any jammed clumps from the mechanism by hand. Oversized clumps from very wet litter are the usual culprit; switch to a faster-clumping litter if it recurs. For rake systems, check that litter has not piled against the rake path, and level the litter bed before restarting.
Litter is tracking everywhere
Place a large textured litter mat outside the entrance to catch granules from paws. Keep litter at the recommended depth; overfilling increases scatter. Top-entry or high-sided designs track less than low open boxes, and finer litters track more than coarse ones.
Odor is bad despite automatic cleaning
Empty the waste drawer more often; sealed does not mean odorless forever. Replace carbon filters on schedule and deep-clean the box monthly, since urine soaks into plastic over time. If odor spiked suddenly, check for a missed cycle or a cat going outside the box, and consider whether a diet change is the real cause.
Questions, answered
Why does the box cycle while my cat is near it?
Sensors detect weight inside the globe, not proximity outside it. A cat sitting against the unit can sometimes confuse older sensors; reposition the box away from walls the cat leans on.
Can I use scented litter in an automatic box?
You can, but many cats dislike strong scents and may avoid the box. Unscented clumping litter with regular cycling controls odor better than fragrance.
How often should I deep-clean an automatic box?
Monthly: empty all litter, wash the globe or tray area with mild soap, wipe sensors, and check moving parts for wear. This prevents most long-term failures.
