Most LED complaints trace to four causes: dimming electronics interacting with shutter speed, a fan working exactly as designed in a quiet room, honest colour limits of budget emitters, and power maths nobody did before the shoot. Work through these fixes before returning a light that may be innocent.

Light flickers or bands on camera, especially in slow motion

Change one variable at a time: raise the dimming level toward 100 percent where PWM artefacts vanish, set shutter to a flicker-safe value for your mains frequency (1/50 in 50 Hz regions, 1/60 in 60 Hz regions), and retest. If flicker only appears below 20 percent brightness, light at full power from further away or through diffusion instead of dimming deeply.

Fan noise is audible on dialogue recordings

Engage silent or quiet mode if the light offers one, accepting its output cap, move the light further from the microphone and let inverse square work for the audio instead of the exposure, and keep full-power running for takes without dialogue. A boom microphone close to talent fixes more noise problems than any light setting.

Skin tones look green or magenta on camera

Set a manual white balance from a grey card under your actual key light instead of trusting auto, which hunts between mixed sources. Kill or match competing practicals, and check whether a budget panel is the culprit by shooting the same frame under daylight: if daylight is clean, the panel's colour quality is the ceiling and grading can only partly help.

Battery runtime is far shorter than expected

Do the watt-hour maths: a 100W light drains a 99Wh V-mount in under an hour at full power after conversion losses. Dim to the level the shot needs, carry batteries sized to the booking, and remember that RGB and maximum-temperature extremes draw more than mid-range white settings.

Questions, answered

Why does my light change colour as it dims?

Cheaper drivers shift temperature and tint at low percentages. Quality COBs hold colour across the range; if yours shifts, work in its stable upper range and control exposure with distance and ND.

Can I use photographic gels on LED panels?

Yes, clipped to barn doors with an air gap. LEDs run cool enough for standard gels, unlike tungsten. Never tape gel directly onto a hot COB lens or reflector interior.

My app will not find the light. What now?

Update the app and light firmware as a pair, re-pair Bluetooth with location permissions granted, and keep the phone within a few metres for the first connection. Most ecosystems are stable once paired.
