Pick the geometry first

Cross-line lasers (GLL55, DW088K) project level and plumb on one wall: perfect for cabinets, tile walls, and hanging. Three-plane 360 lasers (GLL3-330CG, 603CG) wrap whole rooms for flooring, framing, and showers. Point lasers transfer plumb and square between surfaces. Rotary lasers (RL-H5A) spin a plane across a site for grade. Buying the wrong geometry is the only real mistake in this category.

Green versus red, honestly

Green diodes appear roughly four times brighter to human vision and hold up in lit interiors, at higher tool and battery cost. Red tools remain accurate, cheaper, and longer-running, and with a detector they work fine in bright spaces. Indoors without a detector, green wins; outdoors, neither eye-visible beam matters and the detector decides.

Accuracy classes and calibration

Finish work needs plus/minus 1/8 inch at 30 feet or better; framing tolerates more; grading rotaries specify arc seconds. Whatever you buy, verify accuracy on arrival with a simple two-point test, and re-check after drops. Premium features like Bosch CAL Guard automate that vigilance.

Mounts, detectors, and power

Magnetic mounts, clamp mounts, and tripods decide how fast you work solo. Detector compatibility extends line lasers into big, bright spaces. Rechargeable platforms beat AA budgets within a year of regular use, while AA backup saves remote jobs. Budget the system, not just the laser.

Questions, answered

What is self-leveling range and why does it matter?

Most tools self-level within plus/minus 4 degrees of true level and blink or beep beyond it. Wider ranges forgive sloppier tripod setups on site work.

Can a laser level replace a spirit level?

For layout, yes and better. For checking a single surface or working in full sun without a detector, the spirit level still earns its truck space.

How do I test my laser's accuracy?

Mark the line on a wall, rotate the tool 180 degrees on the same spot, and compare marks. Half the gap between marks is your error at that distance.

Are cheap green lasers eye-safe?

Reputable tools are Class 2 or 3R and safe for momentary viewing; never stare into any laser beam or aim at faces, regardless of brand.
