A headlamp that dies hours before its rated runtime is usually not broken; it is being drained by physics, settings, or storage habits. Work through these causes before replacing a lamp that may be perfectly healthy.

Lamp is dead in the pack

Accidental activation is the number-one killer. Use the lockout mode every time you pack the lamp (most modern lamps have one; learn its press pattern at home), or store it with the battery removed or reversed where the design allows. A small hard case ends the problem permanently.

Runtime collapses in cold weather

Cold slows battery chemistry brutally, especially alkalines. Switch to lithium AAAs in hybrids, keep the lamp and spare cells in an inside pocket until use, and for rear-battery lamps keep the pack against your head under a hat. Warming a 'dead' cold battery often revives much of its charge.

High mode drains the battery in an hour

That is the design working as physics requires: max output is a burst tool for spotting and descents, not a cruising setting. Run medium modes (typically 100 to 250 lumens) for travel, which is where rated runtimes live, and reserve high for moments that need it. If you genuinely need sustained high output, a larger-cell lamp like the HM65R is the answer.

Rechargeable lamp holds less charge each season

Lithium cells age, faster when stored fully charged in heat. Store lamps near half charge in a cool place, and check whether the battery is replaceable: Petzl CORE, Black Diamond BD packs, and 18650 cells all swap in seconds. A two-year-old lamp usually needs a new cell, not a replacement.

Questions, answered

Why is my runtime half the box claim?

Headline runtimes are measured until output falls to a fraction of initial brightness. Your usable-brightness runtime is realistically half to two-thirds of the figure on high modes, and close to claims on low modes.

Do rechargeable AAAs work in hybrid lamps?

Yes, though their lower voltage can trim max output slightly. Eneloop-style cells are the economical middle path for Actik Core and Spot 400 owners.

When is a lamp actually broken?

If a known-good, warm, charged battery produces flicker, mode chaos, or no light after a contact cleaning, the driver or switch has likely failed; that is a warranty conversation with the maker.
