Openers fail protectively: they refuse or reverse when something seems wrong, and the something is usually a sensor, a binding door, or interference, not a dead motor. Read the flash code on the motor unit first; every brand here blinks its diagnosis before you touch a tool.

Door starts down, then reverses and lights flash

The photo-eye sensors see an obstruction or each other badly. Clean both lenses, confirm the sender and receiver indicator LEDs are solid, and realign the receiver until its LED stops flickering. A sun-blasted receiver at certain hours benefits from a small shade or swapping sensor positions.

Remote works at the door but not from the street

Range loss is usually interference or a weak remote battery. Replace the remote battery, then check the opener light bulb: unapproved LED bulbs are the classic range killer. Fit an approved bulb or an antenna extension and range returns. Metal garage doors also justify testing from a side angle.

Wi-Fi app shows offline while remotes work

The opener drive is fine; its radio lost the router, common in metal garages at signal edge. Rejoin the opener to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, move the router or add an access point with line of sight to the garage, and update the opener firmware once reconnected. Local controls never depended on Wi-Fi.

Door strains, jerks, or stops mid-travel

Disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand. If it binds or slams, the fault is springs, rollers, or track, and the opener is protecting itself; book a door technician and do not raise force settings to mask it. If the door floats balanced, inspect the rail coupler and belt or chain tension per the manual.

Questions, answered

How often should I test auto-reverse?

Monthly: lay a 2x4 flat under the door center; the door must reverse on contact. Also wave an object through the photo-eye beam during closing to confirm sensor reversal.

Why does my opener beep continuously?

Commonly a battery-backup alert: dead or disconnected backup battery, or operation on battery during an outage. Check battery status in the app and replace a battery that no longer holds charge.

Can I reset force and travel myself?

Yes, both Chamberlain and Genie provide guided limit and force setup in the manual and app. Change values only after confirming the door itself moves freely by hand.
