Foil vs rotary: choose by face, not by brand

Foil shavers (Braun, Panasonic) oscillate blades behind a thin perforated foil. They cut closest on flat surfaces and suit daily shavers with relatively even facial planes. Rotary shavers (Philips Norelco) spin circular cutters on flexing heads. They follow contours, treat sensitive skin gently, and handle several days of growth better. Map your face: flat cheeks and daily habits point to foil; prominent jawline, sensitive neck, or infrequent shaving point to rotary.

Closeness and comfort are a trade-off

The closest shavers are rarely the gentlest. Aggressive cutting systems like the Panasonic Arc5's 14,000 cpm motor power through dense beards but can irritate delicate skin. Comfort-first systems like the Norelco rotary glide kindly but leave microscopic stubble on flat areas. Decide which you will notice more: the 5 o'clock shadow an hour earlier, or the redness that lasts all morning. Most buyers regret prioritizing closeness over comfort.

Battery, wet/dry, and the features that matter

Wet/dry waterproofing is effectively mandatory: it enables shower shaving and rinsing clean, and wet shaving with gel is the single biggest comfort upgrade available. Battery life matters less than it seems; even 45 minutes covers a week of shaving, but a 5-minute quick charge saves the forgotten-charge morning. Ignore app connectivity and over-engineered cleaning stations unless you value ritual over simplicity.

Price the parts before you buy the shaver

Foils and cutter cassettes wear out every 12 to 18 months, and premium replacements are expensive. A flagship shaver with costly cassettes can exceed a mid-range shaver's 3-year total cost by a wide margin. Before buying, look up the replacement cassette price and multiply by 2 for a 3-year horizon. The Braun Series 3's cheap parts are a genuine strategic advantage, not just a budget feature.

Questions, answered

How much should I spend on an electric shaver?

Budget shavers from major brands shave genuinely well. Pay more for closeness (Series 9 Pro), comfort on sensitive skin (Norelco S9000), or power for coarse beards (Arc5). Always add 3 years of replacement parts to the comparison.

Can an electric shaver replace my manual razor completely?

For most people, yes. Premium electrics reach about 90 percent of blade closeness with far less irritation. Keep a manual razor for detailing edges and the occasional important event if you are particular.

How do I maintain an electric shaver?

Rinse after every use, deep-clean weekly, and replace foils or cutters on schedule. A drop of clipper oil on foils monthly reduces friction. Never bang the shaver to dislodge hair; it damages the foil.

Why does my new shaver irritate my skin?

The 2 to 3 week adjustment period is real when switching from manual. If irritation persists beyond a month, try wet shaving with gel, reduce pressure, or consider that your skin may prefer rotary over foil.
