Size it to the sprawl

Measure your dog stretched out fully, then add 6 to 12 inches. Sprawlers need rectangular pads; curlers fit bolster beds with raised edges. When between sizes, always size up: dogs ignore beds they cannot stretch on. For crates, measure the crate floor, not the dog.

Judge the foam, not the fluff

Support comes from foam density and thickness, not plushness. Look for at least 3 to 4 inches of memory foam for large dogs and 6 to 7 for giants or arthritic seniors. CertiPUR-US certification marks foam made without heavy metals and formaldehyde. Thin polyfill beds feel cozy for a month, then pancake.

Prioritize washability

Dogs are dirty; beds must be washable. Removable machine-washable covers are non-negotiable, and replacement covers extend bed life dramatically. Water-resistant liners protect foam from accidents. If the cover does not come off, the bed has a short useful life no matter how nice the foam is.

Match the bed to the dog's life stage

Puppies need washable, inexpensive beds they will outgrow and possibly chew. Adults need appropriately sized support for their weight. Seniors need thick orthopedic foam and low entry heights. Hot sleepers need elevated airflow cots. One bed rarely serves a dog from puppyhood to old age; plan to upgrade.

Questions, answered

How much should I spend on a dog bed?

Budget beds work for puppies and small healthy dogs. Expect to invest more for large breeds and seniors, where quality foam and warranties pay off over years. Divide the price by the warranty years to compare true cost.

Are donut cuddler beds good?

For small dogs that curl up, yes; the raised rim feels secure. Large dogs and sprawlers find them cramped, and the thin fill offers no orthopedic support.

When should I replace a dog bed?

When the foam no longer springs back, the dog avoids it, or it smells despite washing. Quality foam lasts 3 to 5 years; cheap fill lasts months under heavy dogs.

Do dogs prefer beds over the couch?

Dogs prefer the most comfortable available spot. A genuinely supportive bed in a favored location competes well; a thin flat bed loses to couch cushions every time.
