Convertible Cribs Buying Guide (2027)
How to choose a convertible crib in 2027: CPSC standards, slat spacing, conversions, mattress fit, and certifications.

Safety standards are non-negotiable
All cribs sold in the US must meet CPSC standards: slats no more than 2-3/8 inches apart, no drop-side rails, no cutout designs that trap heads, and structural testing. JPMA certification adds independent lab verification to ASTM standards. Check the CPSC recall database before buying any crib, new or used.
Choose your conversion level honestly
4-in-1 cribs reach the full-size bed; 3-in-1 models stop at the daybed. The fourth conversion is genuine long-term value if you will use it, but be honest: many families never convert past the toddler bed as styles and needs change. Do not pay a large premium for a stage you will skip.
Mattress fit matters more than the mattress brand
Use a standard full-size crib mattress around 52 by 28 inches and check the fit: no more than two fingers of gap between the mattress and the crib sides. A too-small mattress creates entrapment gaps. The mattress itself should be firm; soft sleep surfaces are a SIDS risk factor.
Budget for the whole system
The crib price is the down payment. Add the toddler guardrail, the full-size bed rails for 4-in-1 models, and the crib mattress, none of which are included here. A budget 4-in-1 plus its rails can still cost less than a premium 3-in-1 alone, so compare total system costs, not sticker prices.

Questions, answered
When should I convert to the toddler bed?
Usually between 18 months and 3 years, when the child starts climbing out or reaches 35 inches tall. There is no rush; longer in the crib is safer. Use the guardrail for the transition.
Are used cribs safe?
Only with verification: check the CPSC recall list, confirm it has fixed sides (drop-sides were banned), measure slat spacing at 2-3/8 inches maximum, and ensure all hardware is present and tight. When in doubt, buy new.
What is the safest crib position in the room?
Away from windows, cords, and heaters, with no wall hangings above it. Keep the crib bare: no pillows, blankets, bumpers, or toys, per safe sleep guidance. The mattress with a fitted sheet is the complete setup.
Do I need a special mattress?
You need a firm, flat crib mattress in the standard 52-by-28-inch size that fits snugly. Beyond fit and firmness, mattress features are secondary; certifications like GREENGUARD exist for those who want them.
