Stability is the first specification

Base width, total weight, and wall anchoring decide whether cats trust a tree. As a rule, the taller the tree, the wider the base must be: a 72-inch tower on a sub-24-inch base is a tipping hazard regardless of marketing. Always use the included strap, and place tall trees in corners.

Size perches and condos to your actual cat

Measure your cat curled up; the top perch should exceed that footprint with room to stretch. Average cats need roughly 14-inch perches, large breeds 18 to 20 inches, and condo entrances of 10 to 12 inches respectively. XL belongs to dimensions, not titles.

Scratching: sisal, height, and count

Vertical scratchers need posts tall enough for a full body stretch, wrapped in sisal rope or fabric without gaps. One post per cat plus one spare prevents guarding. Carpet-wrapped posts teach carpet scratching; prefer sisal on posts and keep carpet to perches and condos.

Materials and the five-year view

Solid wood and real carpet last longest; engineered board with faux fur or plush costs less and ages visibly in one to three years of heavy use. Removable washable cushions extend any tree's pleasant life. Price the tree per year of expected service, not per purchase.

Placement is part of the purchase

Measure the corner, window side, or wall run where the tree will live before you order, including how far a door swings and whether a radiator will bake one side of it. A tree placed where the household actually gathers gets used; the same tree exiled to a spare room becomes expensive storage. Leave a route a cat can take in one or two jumps from floor to top perch, because an awkward final leap is where cautious cats quietly give up.

Questions, answered

Do cats actually use cat trees?

Yes, when the tree is stable, tall, and placed where life happens: by a window in a lived-in room. Placement failures, not product failures, cause most ignored trees.

How long does a cat tree last?

Budget plush trees: 2 to 4 years. Carpeted mid-range: 4 to 7. Solid wood: a decade or more with sisal re-wrapping. The frame outlives the covering in every class.

Can I re-wrap worn sisal posts?

Yes. Sisal rope and hot glue renew a post in 20 minutes and are the highest-value maintenance in cat furniture. Replace dangling toys and worn cushions on the same schedule.

Is a used cat tree a good idea?

Risky. Scent marking from strange cats deters many cats, and worn structures hide damage. If used, choose solid-wood frames you can deep clean and re-cover.
