Carry-On Luggage Buying Guide (2027)
How to choose carry-on luggage: hardside vs softside, airline size limits, wheels and handles that last, and the marketing claims to ignore.

Hardside vs softside
Hardside (polycarbonate, polypropylene) protects fragile contents, shrugs off rain, and stacks neatly. It does not expand and can crack if the material is cheap ABS. Softside (ballistic nylon, polyester) is lighter, expands, squeezes into tight spaces, and offers exterior pockets. It offers less impact protection. There is no universal winner: pick hardside if you check the bag sometimes or pack fragile items; pick softside if you fly weekly and value weight and flexibility.
Sizing and airline limits
US majors typically allow 22 x 14 x 9 in; international carriers often shrink to about 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 in with 15 lb weight limits. Measure including wheels and handles, since manufacturers sometimes quote body-only dimensions. When between sizes, the smaller bag that still fits your packing list wins: it fits more sizers and lifts easier.
Wheels and handles that last
Four-wheel spinners dominate for airport maneuvering; look for wheels that are recessed into the shell (less snap-off risk) and roll quietly under load. The telescoping handle should lock at multiple heights with zero wobble: extend it fully in the store and push sideways. Wobble now means breakage later. Metal handle tubes outlast plastic, and a comfortable grip matters on long terminal walks.
Marketing claims to ignore
"Unbreakable" shells: no shell is unbreakable; polycarbonate and polypropylene are simply the best materials. Charging ports and batteries: built-in power banks get removed at security and become obsolete; carry a separate bank. GPS trackers: a Bluetooth tracker does the same job in any bag. Lifetime warranties with fine print: read what is actually covered; airline damage coverage (like Away's) is the meaningful kind.

Questions, answered
What is the best carry-on size for one-bag travel?
Maximum legal carry-on, around 22 x 14 x 9 in, paired with a personal item. That combination covers a week for most packers with laundry once mid-trip.
Should I buy a luggage set instead?
Usually no. Sets bundle sizes you may never use, and the carry-on in a set is often compromised. Buy the best carry-on for your needs first; add a checked bag later only if you need it.
How important is the warranty?
Very for expensive bags: airlines damage luggage regularly. A lifetime or 10-year warranty from an established brand is real insurance. For budget bags, treat them as disposable and skip the warranty math.
When is the best time to buy luggage?
Major sale events and the post-holiday period bring the deepest discounts on premium brands. Prices on luggage are cyclical; if you are not in a hurry, wait for a sale.
