Camping Coolers
Hard-sided coolers ranked on ice retention, capacity, and build.
A cooler's job is measured in days: how long it holds ice in real heat. The numbers that matter are insulation thickness and construction (rotomolded versus injection-molded), capacity in quarts, and empty weight, because a cooler that holds ice for a week is useless if you cannot lift it. All ten coolers below are hard-sided models from 24 to 120 quarts.
Ice retention claims vary wildly by test conditions, so treat manufacturer day-counts as relative rather than absolute: a 5-day cooler beats a 3-day cooler in the same test, but neither number promises much on a 100-degree tailgate. What is comparable is construction quality, capacity, and weight.
How you load a cooler matters almost as much as which one you buy. Pre-chill the cooler with sacrificial ice before packing, freeze everything that tolerates freezing, and aim for roughly two parts ice to one part contents so cold air is not circulating through empty gaps. Block ice melts far more slowly than cubes, so many campers combine a block for longevity with cubes to fill voids. Keep the cooler shaded, open it as rarely as the meal plan allows, and group each day's food so one opening retrieves everything at once.
