Fix it
Sterilizer Limescale, Wet Bottles, or Musty Smell? Fixes (2027)
Fix sterilizer problems: descaling the plate, drying failures, white residue, and musty odors.

Most sterilizer complaints trace to water: hard-water scale insulating the heating plate, too much water leaving parts soaked, or damp storage growing a musty smell. These are maintenance issues with mechanical fixes, and catching them early restores cycle times and confidence.
White crust and lengthening cycles (limescale)
Run the maker's descaling cycle, typically vinegar solution on the plate for the stated time, then one or two plain-water cycles. If your tap water is hard, switch to the water type the manual recommends and descale on calendar schedule rather than waiting for symptoms.
Bottles come out soaking wet from a dryer model
Check that the air intake and vents are unblocked, the filter is clean or replaced, and the load is not overfilled; nested bottles trap water. Choose the longer dry setting for full loads and leave the lid cracked after the cycle only if the manual allows it for your model.
White film on bottles after steaming
That is mineral residue from evaporated hard water, not a sterilizing failure. Descale the unit, use the recommended water, and rinse parts with clean water if your clinician advises; the film reduces as the plate cleans up.
Musty smell inside the sterilizer
Empty and dry the reservoir and chamber after use, store the unit with the lid ajar between days, and wash removable baskets with hot soapy water. A smell that survives a vinegar descale plus a full dry cycle usually means a basket or seal needs replacement.
Questions, answered
Is limescale harmful to my baby?
It is primarily an appliance-performance issue; the residue is mineral. Descaling on schedule keeps steam output correct, which is the safety-relevant point.
Why did my cycle stop mid-run?
Common causes are a dry reservoir boiled out, a scaled plate triggering thermal cut-off, or a lid not fully seated. Refill to the marked line, descale, and reseat the lid.
Can I use citric acid instead of vinegar?
Only if your manual lists it; several makers approve citric-acid descalers. Follow concentrations exactly and rinse with plain cycles after.
