A pressure gate that creeps, chatters, or leaves the wall is telling you its friction budget is spent: the opening is out of square, the pads sit on a baseboard edge, or a growing toddler simply outmuscles friction. Work through the fixes in order, and accept the last one when it applies: some openings need screws.

Gate slides when pushed

Remove and reinstall with the frame unloaded: seat all four pads on flat wall above the baseboard or with a baseboard adapter, tighten adjusters evenly a quarter turn at a time, and shake-test firmly. Add the screw-in wall cups the maker supplies; they convert a friction fit into a captured fit and are the standard cure.

Door will not latch or pops open

The frame is usually racked: loosen all adjusters, square the frame so the door gap is even top and bottom, and retighten evenly. A latch forced against a twisted frame wears quickly and releases under toddler weight.

Wall dents and paint damage

Fit large wall-protector cups to spread pressure, reduce tension to the minimum that passes a firm shake test, and never compensate for a wrong-size extension by over-torquing; that is what crushes drywall.

Toddler can push the whole gate out

That gate and location have reached the end of pressure mounting. Move it to a between-room opening and install a hardware-mounted gate in its place, especially anywhere near stairs. No adjustment restores a friction fit a child can defeat.

Questions, answered

How often should I recheck a pressure gate?

Weekly shake tests, and after any impact or furniture move nearby. Pads creep microscopically and toddlers test daily.

Why does my gate lean after a few weeks?

Uneven adjuster tension racks the frame over time. Back all four off and retension evenly from scratch.

Can I use a pressure gate in a doorway with a door that closes?

Yes if the door's swing does not strike the gate and the frame seats on the trim or wall per the manual; test both doors through their full arcs.
