Portion accuracy and kibble size

Start with the food, not the feeder. Measure your cat's daily ration, decide how many meals it should split into, and check that the feeder's portion step is small enough to hit that ration without rounding up every day. Then check kibble size: every dispenser states a maximum kibble diameter, and oversized dental kibble or irregular shapes are the leading cause of jams and silently missed meals. A feeder that dispenses standard kibble consistently beats a smarter one that chokes on yours.

App versus timer control

WiFi feeders add remote feeding, schedule changes from anywhere, low-food alerts, and feeding logs, which genuinely help travelers and owners of cats on medical diets. Timer feeders give up those features and gain independence: no account, no 2.4 GHz setup, and a schedule that cannot be affected by a router change. Decide by how often you will actually use remote control, not by which feature list is longer.

Power and battery backup

Any feeder a cat depends on alone needs a power plan for outages. Look for AC power with battery backup, or a battery-only design, and confirm the clock and schedule, not just the motor, survive on backup. Fit fresh backup batteries before trips, test by unplugging the unit and watching a scheduled meal dispense, and remember that app alerts stop when the internet does even while local feeding continues.

Multi-cat strategies

Fairness is a layout problem as much as a product choice. Dual-bowl feeders serve two cats simultaneously and solve most stealing; splitters do the same job more cheaply and less precisely. Cats on different diets, strict medical rations, or with a history of guarding need separate feeders in separate areas, full stop. Bowl shape matters too: wide, shallow bowls reduce whisker fatigue, stainless steel cleans easier than plastic, and a grazer may do better with a sealed bowl protecting small all-day access than with set meals.

Questions, answered

Should I buy one feeder per cat?

Peaceful cats on the same food can share a dual-bowl feeder. Different diets, medical rations, or food guarding each justify a feeder per cat, placed apart so each cat eats unobserved.

Are stainless bowls really better than plastic?

For most cats, yes. Stainless is easier to clean thoroughly, does not hold food oils in scratches, and is the usual recommendation for cats prone to chin irritation. Wide and shallow matters as much as material for whisker comfort.

How often should I clean an automatic feeder?

Wash bowls weekly and wipe the hopper and dispensing path monthly. Kibble oils coat surfaces and turn stale, and buildup near the outlet contributes to jams and picky refusals.

Can a feeder replace a pet sitter on vacation?

It can cover meals for a few days for a healthy adult cat, with battery backup fitted and the hopper checked. Longer trips still need a human visiting for water, litter, and the one thing no feeder reports reliably: whether the cat is actually eating.
